İrem Kurt is an Industrial Designer at AIATA Boats, where she works on yacht design, product development, and user-centered design. She focuses on combining aesthetics, functionality, manufacturability, and sustainability to create innovative and practical solutions for the marine industry.

Could you tell us about the beginning of your professional journey? What inspired you to pursue industrial design, and how did your path lead you to the marine industry?

Industrial design has always fascinated me for its ability to bring together aesthetics and engineering. During my university years, while working on product development, manufacturing processes, and user-centered design, I realized that design isn't just about creating good-looking products, but about solving real problems. My career's shift toward the marine industry gave me a highly multidisciplinary field to work in. Today, working at AIATA Boats, I have the opportunity to bring design, engineering, and production together within the same project.

As an Industrial Designer at AIATA Boats, what are the most important factors you consider when designing a boat, and how do you balance aesthetics, functionality, and user experience?

In boat design, my priority is the user experience. The ergonomic use of space, storage solutions, manufacturability, durability, and ease of maintenance are just as important as aesthetics. Every millimeter matters, especially in boat interiors. That's why design decisions need to be both production-friendly and long-lasting. Aesthetics is the final layer that supports this functional structure.

What emerging trends and innovations do you believe will have the greatest influence on boat and yacht design in the coming years?

The transformation in lifestyles during the post-pandemic period has also reshaped boat usage habits. One of the most important trends in this new period is developing flexible, modular solutions that can adapt to different needs and lifestyles, since every user's expectations, habits, and usage scenarios at sea differ from one another.
At AIATA Boats, we place this transformation at the center of our design approach; we embrace a design philosophy that listens to and understands the end user's needs and responds to them. By bringing a new perspective to the concept of series-produced boats, we ensure that boats take shape around the user experience through modular living spaces and flexible usage solutions.
What matters to us is not the person adapting to the boat, but the boat adapting to the person's lifestyle.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important across the marine sector. How do you see designers contributing to more environmentally responsible products and solutions?

Sustainability begins long before a boat ever touches the water. As designers, we have the opportunity to shape a product's environmental impact from the very first stages of the development process. At AIATA Boats, sustainability is a core part of both our design philosophy and our production processes.
For example, by combining vacuum infusion technology with advanced engineering and simulation software, we're able to develop boats that are lighter, more durable, and offer higher seaworthiness compared to traditional production methods. This approach optimizes material use while also helping to reduce waste generated during production. In addition, a significant portion of the energy used at our production facilities comes from solar panels, which supports a more environmentally friendly approach to manufacturing.
Sustainability isn't limited to the production stage; it's an approach that spans the entire life cycle of our boats. The lightweight structure enables lower fuel consumption, while the solar panels used on our boats improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. This holistic approach we've adopted at AIATA Boats ensures that our products not only deliver high performance but also remain mindful of their environmental impact throughout their life cycle.

Looking back at your career so far, is there a particular project or achievement that you are especially proud of, and what made it memorable?

One of the projects I'm proudest of in my career is being part of the development process for AIATA Boats' Wayfinder and Sunfinder series. In these projects, we continuously work to improve yacht interiors while focusing on striking the right balance between aesthetics, functionality, manufacturability, and user experience.
What makes these projects special to me is watching an idea go from a 3D model to production, and finally come to life in a completed boat. Being involved in design revisions, working closely with engineering and production teams, and experiencing the final product that emerges are a major source of motivation for me. This process shows me, in every project, that successful design isn't just about aesthetics - it also needs to solve real problems and add value for the user.

Having had the opportunity to review MSM Yacht Interiors' work and capabilities, what aspects of the company's approach to yacht interiors and custom furniture stand out to you the most?

One of MSM Yacht Interiors' greatest strengths is its ability to combine design quality with high manufacturing standards. The attention to detail in custom-made furniture in particular, along with the quality of craftsmanship and the production capability to adapt to different projects, stands out. Their ability to successfully bring a design concept to life is a significant advantage.

In your opinion, how important is the collaboration between designers and specialized interior manufacturers such as MSM Yacht Interiors in transforming a design concept into a successful final product?

Good design can achieve success with the right production team. While designers develop ideas, manufacturers ensure those ideas are practically achievable in real life. Strong communication established early on both reduces costs and improves quality. This is especially important in the yacht industry, where production precision is high, making continuous collaboration between design and production teams essential.
